Students Explore Resource Sector Careers

5/06/2017

Year 10 students recently participated in a ‘Toolkit for School Kids’ workshop run by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA).

During the one-day workshop at the CQUniversity, 26 Rocky High students listened to industry trades people from the Sibelco Magnesia Plant (formerly Queensland Magnesia) to understand more about their roles and what they do. Students participated in a safety induction and a range of practical activities in the hands on component of the workshop. The aim of the activities was to expose the students to a number of trade experiences to help them make informed career choices. This day was a good opportunity for Year 10 students to reflect on their career aspirations.

The industry representatives from Sibelco shared some valuable recruitment tips with the students, including the types of activities employers like to see on resumes. One of these activities is work experience. The students were very well behaved and asked excellent questions according to the Sibelco workers.

During Term 3, students will learn about ‘VET in Schools’ courses to be offered by CQUniversity in 2018 which can contribute to their senior schooling portfolio. These courses may include Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure, Certificate II in Automotive Servicing, Certificate II in Construction and Certificate II in Electro-Technology. Students should see FEET First for more information about these courses.
