The Music program at Rockhampton State High School is an integral part of The Arts Faculty, the school’s curriculum and its extra-curricular activities. The Instrumental Music programs commenced in feeder primary schools are continued, with weekly lessons conducted, while students are given many opportunities to display their talents both in the school and in the wider community. Students of strings, woodwind, brass and percussion are encouraged to be a part of the school’s Big Band, Concert Band, String Ensemble and Orchestra. Band groups and individual performers play at events such as the school’s Awards’ Night, Showcase, Expo, Eisteddfod, M.A.D.D. evening, as well as school fetes, and the Rockhampton show, to name a few.
Playing in a group provides students with the chance to interact with, and learn from fellow students in a stimulating environment. Similarly, the annual school musical provides an excellent opportunity for students from all year levels to work together on a project requiring commitment and dedication. The result is always impressive, and the school is justifiably proud of this reputation.
In classroom music programs, students are encouraged to explore and experiment with various forms of music. They listen, examine, create, write music and write about music. The senior course is challenging as well as enjoyable for all students with an interest in this art form.
Opportunities are also available to students to learn other instruments in Rich Studies, and in lunchtime ad hoc groups. An example of this is Guitar, which is being studied at lunchtime. Students who wish to form their own bands such as rock bands or choral groups are always strongly supported.
Rocky High’s Music Program Rocks…. We invite your child to get involved.
