Rockhampton State High School provides opportunities for studies in Health and Physical Education at every year level.
All Year 8 students participate in Health and Physical Education (HPE401) in semester 1 or 2, where they learn about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and participate in a variety of physical activities including Track and Field, Team Sports and Swimming.
In Year 9 and 10, students study a “Foundation” unit (HPE501) in Semester 1 and can then choose subsequent elective units such as HPE502, HPE503 and HPE504 in semester 2.
Similarly, Year 10 students also study a foundation unit(HPE601)and then can choose from a variety of elective units after wards such as HPE602,HPE603 and HPE604.
Rich Studies units are also offered within the Health and Physical Education Department and includes Fitness Training, Rugby League training, Olympic Sports and Cricket.
Year 11 and 12
In the senior school, students also have a variety of Health and Physical Education choices:
Year 11 and 12 Physical Education – (Board Accredited)
and/or
Year 11 and 12 Physical Recreation – (SAS)
And/or
Senior Health (Board Accredited)
These subjects both prepare students for healthy and active lifestyles whilst also providing pathways to careers and links to further training and/or tertiary studies.
In addition to the traditional Health and Physical Education Programme, Rockhampton SHS also promotes a Healthy Schools focus. All students in all year levels had the opportunity to build personal wellness through RAP(Responsible Adolescent Programme) in Year 8, relationships building sessions in Year 9 and 10, and ‘Big Days In’ for Year 11 and 12 students. This focus is facilitated by our school nurse along with other paid expert community personnel. It is planned that this programme will continue to develop in future years to meet or students emotional and social needs.
