Guidance Officer – Mr Alan Fraser
The Guidance Officer’s role in the school is to provide for students and parents in areas of personal, vocational and academic counselling.
Personal Counselling: Students are welcome to come and discuss any issue on a confidential basis (so that they feel comfortable speaking freely). Areas of concern may be at school or at home and could include problems with students, peer group pressure, stress, relationships (friends, teachers and parents), financial concerns (e.g. AUSTUDY) and accommodation problems. Where appropriate, contact can also be made with other community agencies such as Lifeline, Centrecare etc.
Vocational Counselling: A wide variety of information is available to students about careers and courses including information about TAFE Colleges, Universities, Apprenticeships and traineeships. Many students are not sure what they would like to do when they finish school and often need some help getting started. If the information is not available at school then students can usually be provided with contacts which can be followed up.
Students are also able to access the OZJAC computer database which allows searches of hundreds of different courses and careers. Printed information available includes the Queensland Job Guide and TAFE and University Handbooks.
Academic Counselling: Students may come for academic counselling for a number of reasons including appropriate selection of subjects, subject changes and choice of subjects related to careers. Other concerns are often related to school work where students need assistance with time management, organisation and study plans.
Particularly for senior students, there are computer programmes which help students attain an idea of possible OPs they could receive based on information from past students.
Appointments: Students may make guidance appointments during class time by filling out the booking sheet at the Guidance Office and taking a permission slip to their class teacher. If the time is not suitable to the teacher then students will simply be asked to choose an alternative time. Permission is not needed for appointments during lunch hours or before or after school. Parents may ring the school and leave a message to arrange appointments.
Location: The Guidance Officer is located in the Administration Services Building opposite the Administration Block.
